High potential and gifted education

At Murrumburrah Public School, we are proud to align our approach with the NSW Department of Education’s High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) policy, which recognises the diverse strengths and needs of gifted and high potential students.

Our approach focuses on four key domains:

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

At Murrumburrah Public School, our High Potential Gifted Education program is designed to nurture and challenge every learner through a dynamic blend of in-class support and targeted withdrawal programs. Every class is an enrichment class, where differentiation is seamlessly integrated to meet the diverse strengths and learning needs of our students.

We celebrate each child’s unique abilities, guiding them to reach their full potential and become confident, lifelong learners.

  • Teachers identify students' learning needs in the classroom and use evidence-informed teaching practices to challenge and extend students. We provide learning pathways, including enrichment and extension programs and acceleration.
  • Our supportive classroom environments promote a sense of belonging and encourage risk-taking, creativity and collaboration.
  • Groups are flexible, students take lead roles, and feedback is strengths-based with clear goals.
  • Our teachers engage in professional learning to support the diverse needs of all students, including our high potential and gifted learners.
Across our school

Beyond the classroom, our students access rich opportunities to deepen their talents. Every student is individual, so opportunities are flexible and diverse.

  • Leadership and student voice initiatives empower students to lead and contribute through structured peer support opportunities, leadership projects and Class Repesentatives from K-6
  • Our STEM Enrichment Program focuses on deepening our students’ intellectual curiosity while developing innovation and collaboration.
  • Daily life invites curiosity and belonging, with a range of student led clubs based on student interests passions and wellbeing needs.
  • Our Creative Arts program is celebrated through school performances within our school, Choir, School band and Drum Corp groups, and our Visual Arts and Dance programs.
Across NSW

At our school, students with high potential and gifted abilities have access to a wide range of opportunities supported by the NSW Department of Education. Through statewide programs, we extend and enrich student learning, allowing them to tap into their talents beyond the classroom. Our students participate in local, state, and national competitions and events designed to challenge and develop their skills.

  • Talent is celebrated through school performances within our school and beyond such as Schools Spectaculars and Operation Art.
  • Students deepen strengths through Multicultural Public Speaking, Premiers Spelling Bee and debating competitions, and participation in ICAS assessment challenges.
  • Premier’s Sporting Challenge (PSC) promotes whole-school participation in physical activity with leadership pathways and professional learning.
  • The Representative School Sport Pathway and PSSA events enable our students to trial and compete in sports at regional, state and national levels, fostering discipline, commitment and collaboration.
  • Collaboration with Aurora College to extend selected academically gifted students.
